The Album So Far Upcoming Tunes Jill's Blog

I don't know how many other bands you'll find out there doing this!  We're posting the raw demos of the songs we're working on here.  Some of them are pretty.. um.. "rough", but every song has to start somewhere!

Song #4: "Like You"

"Like You" is the next song to be recorded and released for Jill Spilled Scotch's album, "Arrows".

This song was written around three years ago, a few months after my father passed away.  We were close, but the relationship between a father and son is a complex one, and we'd had our bumps along the way.  I'd been away from my family while he was sick, and by the time I made it back, he was gone.  Two of my sisters were with him through everything.  It's funny how you think you are so different from your parents when you're growing up, but you realize as an adult that you'll be lucky if you turn out even a little bit like them.

"Like You" was written and the demo recorded in one long rainy night.  Prior to that, I'd only let the emotions out for very brief, very concentrated periods of time, and I was almost worried that I wasn't feeling as much as I thought I should.  The experience of writing and recording the demo turned out to be a catharsis that was long overdue.  The music and lyrics came quickly but I had to do a ton of takes to get any vocals done because I kept breaking down.

I only recorded it to share with my family, and I resolved not to touch the song again after it was done.  I figured that even though the demo was really rough, it was a snapshot of a moment in time and it should stay that way.  After the first few songs on "Arrows" were finished, though, I have to admit that I was a little shocked at the quality we'd achieved, and I began to think that I should do right by the song and do it in the best way I could.  Chad agreed, because he felt that songs with real emotion behind them are always effective and worth doing right.  So here we are.
